Horace Fletcher known as «the great masticator» invented in the early 20th century a method called the «Fletcherisme». The idea came to him because of his digestive problems after meals. He self-experienced his mastication method and lost more than 20 kilos, curing his chronic indigestion.

The concept is to chew 32 times each bite that is liquid or solid, as many times as we have teeth. The reason is to ensure a proper saliva mixture of the food and liquids and to activate the jaw muscles.

Digestion is improved, satiety is reached more effectively rather than « wasting » time to masticate. This approach has proven itself but was almost completely forgotten during the 20th century to focus on the counting of calories.
