Whole-grain and fiber intake prevent diabetes

Today I am sharing with you this study on rich fiber diet that reduces the risk of developing type 2 diabetes by 18%, according to a large European cohort study published in Diabetologia.

According to a European study, a high – fiber diet decreases the risk of type 2 diabetes by 18%. An epidemiologist at the university of Cambridge noted that cereal fiber was the most strongest protector to fight against diabetes compared to fruit and vegetal fibers. Additionally, the researches stated that it also reduces body mass index (BMI).

A lower BMI and a prevention of type 2 diabetes

The results suggest that diets rich in fibre particularly cereal fibre may prevent from type 2 diabetes
Their data were taken from the EPIC-InterAct Study on a cohort of more than 340,000 people from different european countries to research the relationships between lifestyle, diet and different chronic diseases and to calculate the odd ratios. The follow-up lasted 11 years and the researches discovered 12,403 of new cases of type 2 diabetes. The participants were divided into four parts considering fibre intake from lowest to highest.

This finding “suggests that the beneficial effects of fibre may be partly mediated by a lower BMI, and this is consistent with other studies,” the researchers wrote.

The results suggest that diets rich in fibre particularly cereal fibre may prevent from type 2 diabetes.

However, when the researches made adjustments with BMI, the results became statistically less significant.

Overall, the findings underly that the participants who ate a higher quantity of fiber were unlikely to be overweight.

Fibers have also many health benefits for diabetics

Nevertheless, the investigators are not completely aware of the mechanisms behind but it possibly could be a longer release of hormonal signals or a decelerate in nutrient absorption.

The phd student at the Norwegian university of science and technology said that it could also enhance the blood sugar and decrease postprandial peaks of insulin.

In the USA, individuals having a high risk of being diabetic should follow the recommendations of the US department of Agriculture for dietary fibre.

As maintened by the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition and based on the results of their study on 2286 men and 2030 women aged 40-69 y old and free of diabetes, food data was collected from 1966 to 1972 with a dietary interview that covers the regular diet of the previous year.

They found that the mean consumption of whole grains was higher in men than in women.

As reported by the Canadian Diabetes Association, their recommendation is to eat 25 to 50 grams of fiber on a daily basis.

Soluble fibre compared to insolubre fibre reduces cholesterol and helps to control blood sugar.

Moreover, they highlight in their article that fibres not only controls weight but it also helps diabetics to lower heart disease risks.

One of their tips in order to increase fiber intake, is to add almonds or other nuts in a salad.
