Today I’m sharing with you an article on healthy eating and active living. According to a US National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, in the United Arab Emirates, obesity is three times more important than in other countries. Young adults aged 10-18 are 1.8 times more obese than in the United States. These teenagers are much more exposed to develop health issues that affect their quality and length of life.

Healthy Eating and Active living campaign with 3 strategies

The vision of the UAE 2021 is to promote a healthcare system and their target is to reduce the number of obese people by 31 %. The aim of this project is to reduce the prevalence of obesity among young children. Doctors, academics are welcoming the efforts held across the country to fight against the disease whereas observers are concerned that more is needed. One solution could be a public health campaign in schools called HEAL (Healthy Eating and Active Living). It could be a way to advocate healthy eating habits and good nutrition. Through exercices, young people would enhance the way they eat and what they eat. These simple changes can have a powerful positive effect on young people and that change is more inclined to be unceasing.

Three efficient strategies could be presented quickly. First, a direct campaign that shows the inefficacy of diets. According to Immanuel Azaad Moonesar, principal researcher at the Mohammed bin Rashid School of Government, « Diets are like fashion: different trends come and go, and very few have a lasting effect. Let’s get young people to think about realistic food plans ».

The second action is to convert plans into a food contract. They should write down what their plan is and their motives. Than, they should share it to friends, family etc. If something is said publicly, we are more likely to keep a promise.

At last, help to adopt healthy eating habits. Dietitians and nutritionists say that it takes 21 days to put into place a new habit. One of the key target of the HEAL campaign would be to encourage the formation of healthy eating habits. Support peer groups could be organised to discuss about healthy breakfasts for instance. The environment (parents, caretakers) can also play an important role by creating meal plans for example.

A public health campaign but with good science

A public health campaign should of course be established by good science.

A perfect healthy plate should consider colors, nutrients in the right portions and size.

Another important aspect is to practice daily activities such as swimming, running, any kind of sports to help prevent diabetes, obesity and this could be promoted in schools.

The major health concern is obesity among young adults and children. As a matter of fact, prevention is essential. This is the reason why partnerships together with schools could help many children. Actions is needed in between with the government, health authorities… but it can be completed.
